Experience Fresh Island Food at Kauai Farmers Markets
Sunshine Markets (another name for Kauai Farmers’ Markets) not only feature a variety of organic produce, they oftentimes feature gorgeous tropical flowers in a festive and vibrant atmosphere. Sample fresh fruit and vegetables (like the strange looking, but delicious rambutan or the unforgettable apple bananas), sip ice-cold coconut water with a straw, meet the farmers, and even get recipes from them to share.
What you may not know is that no two farmers’ markets on Kauai are the same. Each one has a unique personality and variety of fresh food, harvested that morning. Some even feature activities that turn an ordinary visit into an extraordinary one with cooking demonstrations, live music, and more.
The Kauai Culinary Market (open Wednesdays from 4 p.m. 6 p.m.) and the Kauai Community market (open Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. 1 p.m.) also feature hot meals, special events, and more.
The Sunshine Markets from Kilauea to Kekaha begin sales with a whistle blow. Fruits, vegetables, plants, and flowers grown by local farmers are featured at these markets. Produce goes fast as the market is only open for two hours, so it’s best to get there early.
Some communities on the Garden Isle – such as the Hanalei Saturday Market (open from 9:30 a.m. noon) – have opened their own farmers’ market. Surrounded by lush vegetation and breathtaking mountain ranges, you’ll see an array of organic produce to choose from. You may want to get there early as lines do form before the market opens, but shopping at these markets is done at a more leisurely pace.
