Sway to Tahitian dance at Heiva I Kauai

A colorful and exciting event is swaying Kauaiians and visitors alike. Heiva I Kauai is gearing up for its 14th annual celebration of Tahitian cultural dance and competitions. Guests call the event “a wonderful and fun” way to spend a few days immersing yourself in the music, moves, and drums.

Heiva I Kauai features solo Tahitian dance competitions for children and adults, ages 4-50+, and traditional and contemporary group Tahitian dancing and drumming competitions. This event draws competitors from throughout Hawaii, the Mainland, and Japan.

A special, visiting Tahitian dance group from Honolulu, Te Vai Ura Nui, will perform traditional Otea and modern Aparima and Ahupurotu dances, music, and drumming on both days.

Each year, Heiva I Kauai is held during the first weekend in August, making this year’s annual event set for Aug. 12, 2015 at Kapaa Beach Park (41464 Kuhio Highway in Kapaa). The affordable family festival costs $6 per person, per day. Children under 6 years-old are admitted free. The festival is open both days from 10 a.m. 5 p.m.

Many people rave about this festival, which is always well attended, saying they even enjoy it more than a traditional luau.

You don’t have to be a dancer or movement artist to experience and enjoy Heiva I Kauai. Audience participation is always welcome and encouraged, especially when it comes to the coconut husking contests. During the coconut husking contests, participants crack the coconut and husk it, trying to see how much milk they can squeeze out of it. The winner gets a prize!

More than 40 vendors will be displaying a variety of Polynesian arts, crafts, jewelry, wood work, clothing, woven baskets, and food for purchase – with special emphasis on Tahitian products. Polynesian artists and crafters will also be on-hand to demonstrate various cultural practices.

So come out and see this colorful production and experience the thrill of Polynesian dance and drumming! Our Koloa Landing staff would be happy to provide directions to Heiva I Kauai or answer any questions you have about the two-day cultural celebration.

And, if you’re concerned about parking, don’t be. There are plenty of parking options near the festival in Kapaa. Give our staff a call at 808-240-6600 to find out more.
